The 14th of February is a day when it is traditional to send a card, usually anonymously, to a person you are romantically involved with or attracted to. It is a day which lovers express their affection to one another. This special holiday dates back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. Back then, the purpose of this holiday was to celebrate the coming of spring, which included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. Lupercalia was then replaced at the end of the 5th century with St Valentine’s Day by Pope Gelasius. From that day on, St Valentine’s came to be celebrated as a day of romance! Keep up with the tradition of St Valentine’s Day, by sending one of these lovely greeting cards to someone you hold near and dear.
