17. Kansai international airport, Osaka bay, Japan
To construct this airport, an entire artificial island was created in the Pacific Ocean, off the Osaka Bay. The island is made to be earthquake and typhoon proof and has been awarded the “Civil Engineering Monument of the Millennium” award by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2001. The approach shows the aircraft descending in turquoise blue waters just as the runway emerges in the small island.
