A 60 ton, 18 feet tall statue has been put into the water surrounding the New Providence in Nassau, Bahamas. Titled ?Ocean Atlas? it is the latest sculpture created by Jason deCaires, who we have covered previously for his amazing underwater sculptures. The purpose of deCaires sculptures is to encourage the growth of coral and provide an environment in which marine life can flourish.
Being the biggest underwater sculpture ever deployed it is also an obvious tourist attraction. The sculpture depicts a local Bahamian girl carrying the weight of the ocean in reference to the Ancient Greek myth of Atlas. The sculpture is part of a larger ongoing project to build an underwater sculpture garden to honor its founder Sir Nicholas Nuttal.
